Parliament's Upcoming Monsoon Session
The Monsoon session of Parliament is scheduled to begin on July 21 and will conclude on August 12, 2025, as announced by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday. Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha will convene at 11 AM on July 21 after a break of over three months. The dates for the session were recommended by the Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Previous Budget Session and Opposition Demands
The Budget session commenced on January 31 and wrapped up on April 4, when both houses were adjourned indefinitely, marking the end of the first parliamentary session of 2025. This announcement comes amid calls from opposition leaders for a special session to discuss 'Operation Sindoor,' a recent military exercise targeting nine terrorist locations in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. In response to these demands, Rijiju stated that parliamentary rules allow for all issues to be raised during the Monsoon session.
Timing of the Session Announcement
The announcement of the Monsoon session's dates coincides with opposition leaders' insistence on convening a special session to discuss 'Operation Sindoor.' This military operation involved precise strikes on terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, executed in retaliation for a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals. The operation was carried out late on May 6.
