Parliament's Monsoon Session Approaches

The Monsoon Session of Parliament is scheduled to commence on Monday, with expectations of significant disruptions. Just a day before the session's start, a multi-party meeting and the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting revealed stark differences between the government and the opposition. The opposition has devised a strategy to confront the government on pressing issues such as the NEET paper leak, the Ayodhya Ram Temple donation scandal, and the violence in Manipur. Meanwhile, the government has called for cooperation to ensure smooth legislative proceedings. This session is anticipated to run from July 20 to August 13.

Legislative Agenda and Calls for Cooperation

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju announced that eight bills are on the agenda for the Monsoon Session, with discussions on any additional legislative work to be held in the BAC. Rijiju urged political parties to engage in meaningful discussions regarding the bills presented by the government. During the initial part of the multi-party meeting, opposition parties temporarily walked out over issues related to rebel members from the Trinamool Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT).

Opposition's Concerns and Demands

The opposition raised objections to the invitation extended to a group of 20 rebel MPs from the Trinamool Congress. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi stated that the opposition has called for discussions on topics such as the alleged 'donation theft' related to the Ram Temple, ethanol issues, student-related matters, and the situation in Manipur. Samajwadi Party MP Dharmendra Yadav highlighted concerns regarding the paper leak, the Election Commission's alleged one-sided actions, and the perceived neglect of the PDA (Backward, Dalit, and Minority) community in government services.

Demands for Clarity on Key Issues

DMK MP Tiruchi Shiva demanded that the government present a clear formula regarding women's reservation and delimitation. Following the multi-party meeting, a BAC meeting chaired by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla took place on Sunday. Birla urged all parties to cooperate fully to ensure that the house proceedings are conducted smoothly and systematically, allowing for comprehensive and meaningful discussions on public interest issues.

Strategic Meeting of Opposition Leaders

Meanwhile, key leaders from opposition parties will convene at 10 AM on Monday to strategize for both houses. According to sources, this meeting will occur in the office of Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, and will include leaders from various opposition parties.

Upcoming Legislative Proposals

During this session, several bills are expected to be introduced, including the National Pride Disparagement (Amendment) Bill, the Birth and Death Registration (Amendment) Bill, and the Income Tax (Amendment) Bill. The Monsoon Session is projected to run from July 20 to August 13.
