New Image of Mojtaba Khamenei Emerges

On Saturday, Iranian state media unveiled a recent photograph of Mojtaba Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, which quickly spread across both domestic and international platforms, including the official accounts of Iranian embassies worldwide. This release is significant as Khamenei has not made a public appearance since his appointment.

In a statement earlier today, Mojtaba Khamenei expressed his intention for "revenge" following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in US-Israel airstrikes on February 28, the first day of the ongoing conflict. His father was laid to rest in Mashhad earlier this week. This declaration came shortly after US President Donald Trump warned that a thousand missiles were "Locked and Loaded" and aimed at Iran.

Mojtaba Khamenei has remained out of the public eye since the conflict began, opting to communicate through written statements. He was anticipated to appear during his father's funeral procession; however, while his brothers Mostafa, Meysam, and Masoud were visibly emotional as they carried their father's coffin in Tehran’s Grand Mosalla, Mojtaba was notably absent. Reports suggest that he did not attend the funeral due to security concerns.

Multiple sources indicate that Mojtaba Khamenei sustained serious injuries in the same strike that claimed his father's life. Iranian officials assert that he is recuperating and has been involved in directing negotiations with Washington. Earlier this year, a social media account claiming to belong to Mojtaba Khamenei emerged, but the images shared were alleged to be digitally altered.

Shayan Sardarizadeh, a senior journalist with the BBC, pointed out on his official X account that the image circulated by various Iranian media outlets and attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei shows signs of AI manipulation. He noted that a reverse image search revealed the original photograph, which was taken at a pro-government rally a few years ago. The authenticity of the new image was further examined using Gemini's SynthID detection feature, which indicated that the image had been edited using Google AI.
