Mohan Bhagwat's 75-Year Remark Sparks Political Speculation: Is Modi Next?

Political Reactions to Bhagwat's Statement

New Delhi: A seemingly innocuous comment from Mohan Bhagwat, the chief of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has stirred the political landscape, leading to widespread speculation. Bhagwat suggested that leaders should consider stepping down at the age of 75, a remark that has been interpreted by some, including Congress and Shiv Sena (UBT), as a subtle jab at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and indicative of potential rifts between the RSS and the BJP.

During a book launch in Nagpur honoring the late RSS thinker Moropant Pingle, Bhagwat stated, "Upon reaching 75, it is time to step aside and allow others to take the lead."

The timing of this statement is particularly noteworthy, as both Bhagwat and Modi will celebrate their 75th birthdays in September, just six days apart.

The Congress party quickly capitalized on this opportunity. Senior leader Pawan Khera remarked that Bhagwat's comment could signify the beginning of the end for Modi's tenure, calling it "good news."

Khera noted, "Mohan Bhagwat is not typically known for delivering good news, but yesterday he did. He indicated that after 75, one should give others a chance. This is significant because Bhagwat turns 75 on September 11, followed by Modi on September 17."

He further speculated about Modi's potential career path had he not pursued politics, humorously suggesting he might have found a place in Bollywood instead.

Khera criticized Modi's leadership over the past 11 years, stating, "The current state of our Constitution and democratic institutions can be attributed to this duo. Their exit would be a relief for India, and Bhagwat's statement has sparked joy across the nation, hinting at better days ahead."

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi shared similar views, referencing the BJP's own retirement age policy established in 2014, which moved older leaders like Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi to advisory roles.

Chaturvedi stated, "There seems to be a clear contradiction between the BJP and RSS now. Bhagwat appears to be reminding everyone that the same rules should apply to all, including Modi."

Following Bhagwat's remarks, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh added a sarcastic touch on social media, referencing Modi's recent five-nation tour and his impending 75th birthday.

Ramesh quipped, "What a welcome back for the Prime Minister, reminded by Bhagwat that he will turn 75 on September 17." He also pointed out that Bhagwat shares the same birthday milestone just days earlier.

As of now, neither Modi nor any official spokesperson from the BJP has commented on Bhagwat's statement or the ensuing political discourse.

However, in May 2023, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had emphasized that there is no retirement clause in the BJP's constitution, asserting that Modi would continue to lead until 2029 and dismissing any rumors of retirement.
