Mohammed Shami's Quest for India Comeback Amid Ranji Trophy Performances
Shami's Ongoing Absence from National Team
The absence of veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami from the national squad for over a year has sparked discussions, particularly during the current Ranji Trophy 2026/27 season, where he continues to excel for Bengal.
Shami last represented India in the Champions Trophy Final against New Zealand last year. Since then, he has been consistently omitted from national selections, including the upcoming multi-format tour to New Zealand. Despite an impressive tally of 68 wickets in the previous domestic season, selectors have chosen to overlook him.
Concerns Over Fitness
Reports suggest that concerns regarding his fitness, particularly his capacity to bowl long spells, have contributed to his exclusion. Selectors appear hesitant to reinstate him in the Test squad, fearing that his body may not endure the demands of international red-ball cricket.
Shami's Determination for a Comeback
Despite being sidelined from the national team, Mohammed Shami remains committed to his international aspirations. After Bengal's recent 60-run victory over Services in the Ranji Trophy, he expressed that he has not given up on his dream of donning the national jersey again, asserting that his physical condition is as robust as ever.
He stated, "Hope should always be there. In any profession or sport, you must have a goal. Right now, our goal is playing the Ranji Trophy and fighting for the title. There is always a goal, and there should be one."
Shami emphasized, "Today as well, I am at my peak. There is no point in lying. Whatever state I am in, I am at my peak."
Focus on Performance
Regarding his exclusion from the New Zealand tour, Shami remarked, "I'm always positive and focused on performing well in every match I play. I want to keep playing as many matches as possible because that helps me maintain my physical momentum, improve my game, and sharpen my skills."
He added, "I'm focused entirely on my own game and don't really concern myself with what others are doing. My priority is to fulfil whatever the team and the game demand of me."
Shami has also distanced himself from social media, preferring to dedicate his time to practice and matches, stating, "I'm trying my best and giving it everything I have. Beyond that, what happens and what doesn't is in God's hands."
Impressive Domestic Performance
In Bengal's opening Ranji Trophy match against Delhi, Shami showcased his skills by taking five wickets, including a four-wicket haul in the first innings. However, he was rested for the next match against Services due to management's rotation policy and pitch conditions.
His performance against Delhi, with figures of 4/30 at an economy rate of 1.70 over 17.3 overs, has reignited discussions among cricket analysts and fans, demonstrating that his renowned control and stamina remain intact.
Positive Outlook on Future Opportunities
On his exclusion from the New Zealand tour, Shami stated, "It's not a matter of disappointment. My motive is clear: I should play as many matches as I can, stay prepared, and keep my rhythm intact."
He further noted, "Nobody knows when and where I will have to play for India again. Even for IPL, playing domestic cricket will be good for me."
Looking Ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup
With the ODI World Cup approaching next year, co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, Shami's inclusion in the Indian squad remains a hot topic. However, he is focused on the present rather than future speculations.
When asked about his ambitions for the World Cup, Shami replied, "The 2027 World Cup is still a year away. I don't think that far ahead because you never know what will happen to a person tomorrow."
He concluded, "Whatever match you get right now, keep playing and keep improving yourself. If I overthink the future, I will just unnecessarily burden myself."
Shami's Career Statistics
Mohammed Shami is recognized as India's leading wicket-taker in ODI World Cup history, with 55 wickets, including four four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls, at an average of 13.52 and an economy rate of 5.13 across 18 matches.
In total, Shami has claimed 462 wickets in his international career, featuring 22 four-wicket hauls and 12 five-wicket hauls, with an average of 26.10 and an economy rate of 4.17 in 197 matches.
