Mohammed Shami Focuses on IPL Comeback Amid Retirement Speculations
Shami's Determination to Continue Playing
Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is not contemplating retirement as he aims to make a significant impact in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. He is set to return to competitive cricket when the Lucknow Super Giants face the Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Cricket Stadium on April 1.
Shami's last match for India was during the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand. Since then, he has not been selected for the England Test tour due to fitness concerns. Despite a commendable performance in the recent domestic season, he was overlooked for the Test series against West Indies and South Africa, as well as the ODI series against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.
Impressive Domestic Performance
In the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shami took 67 wickets across 21 matches. However, he is still waiting for a call-up to the national team, as selectors seem to favor younger pace bowlers for the current international cycle.
Shami's Thoughts on Retirement
After being excluded from the India squad for various series, Shami has faced ongoing questions regarding his future in cricket. In a conversation on Shubhankar Mishra's YouTube channel, he expressed that he is not considering retirement at this time. He stated, "When I get tired, I will call it a day. But I am not even thinking of retirement right now because such thoughts pull you down."
He further elaborated, "If this thought crosses your mind, it means you’re already tired. And if you’re tired, it means you’re bored. I’ll leave cricket the day I wake up and decide to get bored. But neither am I bored nor am I lazy. I am enjoying. Results are good and positive."
Hard Work Over Luck
Shami emphasized that his focus is on performing well rather than worrying about selection. He believes that while luck is out of his control, his attitude and preparation are crucial to his success. He stated, "As a bowler, I will give my 100 percent. I’ll perform my responsibilities and try to meet the expectations set for me. Rest, I can’t change my luck."
He added, "Whenever you’re playing, the main element is satisfaction. Will I get the returns based on all the preparations that I have gone through?"
Aiming for a Strong IPL Season
Last season in the IPL, Shami had a challenging time, taking only 6 wickets at an average of 56.16 and an economy rate of 11.23 over nine matches, despite being acquired for INR 10 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. Ahead of IPL 2026, he was traded to Lucknow Super Giants, where he hopes to regain his form and make a strong impression. This season is vital for Shami as he seeks to catch the attention of the BCCI selectors for a potential return to the national team.
