Mohammed Shami's Retirement Announcement
On November 6, veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami officially declared his retirement from Test cricket. This announcement coincided with his ongoing participation in the Ranji Trophy, where he has played three matches and taken 14 wickets for Bengal.
A Journey of Success
Shami made his Test debut against West Indies at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in 2013, the same day he announced his retirement. Over his illustrious career, he claimed 229 wickets in 64 Test matches, playing a crucial role in India's success in the format.
His last appearance in a Test match was during the World Test Championship Final in June 2023. Following that, he was not selected for subsequent national red-ball teams, leading to speculation about his future.
Emotional Farewell
In a heartfelt late-night social media post, Shami shared a video holding his Test cap No. 279, which was given to him by Ishant Sharma before his debut. He reflected on his 13-year journey in red-ball cricket, expressing that while he is retiring from Test cricket, the memories associated with it will remain with him.
Shami expressed gratitude towards the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) for their unwavering support, which helped him evolve from a domestic player to a global Test star.
Fans Pay Tribute
Shami's retirement has elicited emotional responses on social media, particularly on X (formerly Twitter), where fans and cricket lovers have paid tribute to his remarkable career. Many described him as one of India's finest fast bowlers, expressing sadness over his retirement while celebrating his contributions to Indian cricket.
Some fans lamented that he did not receive enough opportunities to extend his Test career, suggesting he deserved a proper farewell on the field.
Looking Ahead
Despite retiring from Test cricket, Shami is expected to continue playing in white-ball formats for Team India, as well as in domestic limited-overs matches for Bengal and the upcoming IPL season.
