Mohammed Shami Aims for National Team Comeback Amid Domestic Focus
Shami's Determination to Return
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami is resolute in his quest to rejoin the national team after being excluded from the upcoming series against New Zealand. He emphasizes that his immediate focus is on delivering consistent performances throughout the domestic season. Shami is committed to honing his skills and maintaining his form by participating in every match available, as he strives for a spot back in the national squad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the teams for the highly anticipated ODI and Test series against New Zealand, and once again, Shami's name was absent. He shared his thoughts during a Ranji Trophy match between Bengal and Delhi in New Delhi.
Prioritizing Personal Performance
Shami expressed, "I maintain a positive mindset and concentrate on excelling in every game I play. My goal is to participate in as many matches as possible, as this helps me sustain my physical momentum and enhance my skills. That's my current focus. I can only give my best on the field."
With Ajit Agarkar's term as chief selector concluding earlier this month, Pragyan Ojha has stepped into the role. Regarding the new selection committee and social media, Shami stated that he is dedicated to his performance and responsibilities, opting to avoid social media distractions to concentrate on practice and skill enhancement.
Preparing for the 2027 World Cup
As discussions about age arise ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup, Shami is determined to remain competitive through steady performances and a full domestic season. At 37 by the time of the tournament, he remarked, "I am giving my all and leaving the rest to fate."
He highlighted the significance of completing the domestic season for his growth as he aims for a potential return to international cricket. "I am doing my utmost and leaving the outcomes to God. Playing the entire domestic season is crucial for refining my skills and staying ready for future challenges," he added.
Recent Performance Highlights
Shami's last international appearance was in March of the previous year during the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, where India emerged victorious. He played a pivotal role, taking nine wickets across five innings with an average of 25.88.
Since then, he participated in the Duleep Trophy 2026, securing seven wickets in three matches at an average of 26.57, contributing to East Zone's title win. In the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, he claimed 37 wickets in seven matches at an impressive average of 16.72. In his sole match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, Shami recorded figures of 4/30 and 1/29.
In the IPL 2025 and 2026 seasons, his performance was modest, with six wickets in nine matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2025 and twelve wickets in thirteen matches for Lucknow Super Giants in 2026.
Despite these challenges, Shami's strong domestic performances have fueled hopes for his return to the national team, especially after his peer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, also 36, was recalled for the T20I series against New Zealand, which precedes the ODI and Test series.
