Amritsar Soormas Set a Challenging Target
In the opening match of the Sher-E-Punjab T20 League 2026 at IS Bindra Stadium, the Amritsar Soormas made a strong start after being invited to bat by the Mohali Kings. Led by Abhishek Sharma, they posted an impressive total of 258 runs before being bowled out, showcasing a remarkable display of aggressive batting right from the start.
Abhishek and his opening partner, Sahaj Dhawan, launched an aggressive assault on the Mohali bowlers, achieving a 100-run partnership in just 5.1 overs. They consistently found the boundary, giving Amritsar a commanding lead during the powerplay. Dhawan scored a brisk 45 off 18 balls before being dismissed, while Abhishek continued his onslaught.
The captain scored a phenomenal 77 runs off only 26 balls, featuring six fours and seven sixes in a breathtaking display of hitting. Naman Dhir then joined the fray, contributing 47 runs off 22 balls, maintaining the pressure on the Mohali Kings' bowling unit.
Rahul Kumar added to the momentum with a quick 23-run partnership alongside Abhay Choudhary. Rahul scored 23 off 13 balls before Tejpreet Singh provided a breakthrough for Mohali, finishing with three wickets for 38 runs in four overs. With their top and middle order firing, Amritsar Soormas established a strong position in the tournament opener.
Anmolpreet's Century Fuels a Thrilling Chase
In response, the Mohali Kings faced an early challenge as Abhishek Sharma dismissed Manpreet Johal for a duck in the first over. However, Gurmehar Sara and Anmolpreet Singh quickly stabilized the innings, forming a rapid 62-run partnership. Sara scored 26 off 12 balls before falling, giving Amritsar a crucial breakthrough.
The Kings encountered another setback when Aryan Bhatia was dismissed for a duck, leaving them in a precarious position. Under pressure, Anmolpreet Singh and captain Ramandeep Singh took control of the chase, forming a remarkable 151-run partnership for the fourth wicket that shifted the momentum.
Anmolpreet emerged as the standout performer, smashing an incredible 133 runs off just 51 balls, keeping the Kings in contention and bringing the required run rate within reach. Ramandeep then took charge as they approached the target.
With support from Harpreet, who scored 23 off 8 balls, the Kings needed just nine runs from the last two overs. Harpreet was dismissed in a spectacular catch by Naman Dhir, but Mohali remained in a strong position. Ramandeep maintained his composure, finishing unbeaten on 69 off 40 balls, leading the Mohali Kings to a thrilling five-wicket victory with three balls to spare.
Anmolpreet Reflects on the Chase
After the match, Anmolpreet shared his thoughts on the chase, stating, "We had to chase a big target, so I was backing my shots. I discussed with Ramandeep that once you settle in, you need to bat deep and aim for big scores. Our plan was to hit one or two boundaries each over and keep the momentum going."
"We understood the situation was demanding, needing around 12 or 13 runs per over. We focused on finding boundary shots while maintaining our partnership and applying pressure on the bowlers," he added.
