Prime Minister Modi's Call with President Macron

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently received a call from French President Emmanuel Macron. Their discussion focused on the situation in the Hormuz Strait and the broader context of West Asia. Modi emphasized the ongoing collaboration between France and India to promote peace and stability in the region.

In a post on social media, Modi shared insights from his conversation with Macron, stating their commitment to continue close cooperation for regional peace and stability. This call follows a previous discussion on March 5, where both leaders expressed their shared concerns regarding the situation in West Asia and the need to return to dialogue and diplomacy.

Urgent Need for Maritime Security

In his post, Modi mentioned that President Macron reached out to him, and they agreed on the urgent need to restore security and freedom of navigation in the Hormuz Strait. Modi reiterated India's stance that reducing tensions and fostering dialogue and diplomacy are essential for resolving conflicts in West Asia. This comes in the wake of a recent attack by the US and Israel on Iran, which prompted Tehran to retaliate against US bases in Gulf countries. Since then, Modi has engaged with several world leaders.

Amidst the closure of the Hormuz Strait, India appealed for the safe and uninterrupted passage of commercial vessels. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated that attacks on commercial ships are completely unacceptable.

Ceasefire Between Lebanon and Israel

A 10-day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel came into effect at midnight local time on Thursday. This agreement follows over a month of conflict between the Iran-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon and Israel. On Tuesday, both nations engaged in their first direct diplomatic talks in decades, held in Washington.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the agreement for the ceasefire, stating that it aims to advance peace efforts with Lebanon. If this ceasefire holds, it could bolster attempts to extend the ceasefire after weeks of destructive conflict involving Iran, the US, and Israel.
