Modern Surveillance Tools Essential for Border Security in Manipur
Strengthening Border Management in Manipur
Imphal, Dec 21: The Ministry of Home Affairs has emphasized the urgent need for the implementation of advanced surveillance technologies, such as drones and sophisticated sensor systems, to enhance what it terms a robust and 'smart' border management strategy.
This initiative was highlighted during a visit by Rajendra Kumar, Secretary (Border Management), to Moreh in the Tengnoupal district of Manipur on Saturday, where he assessed the security landscape and infrastructure along the India-Myanmar border.
A senior official in Imphal noted that the visit aimed to evaluate the current security framework and the progress of ongoing infrastructure projects at this strategically important border.
During his visit, Kumar inspected frontline border posts and surveillance setups, engaging with personnel to understand operational difficulties and collect feedback to enhance effectiveness on the ground.
This security assessment occurred shortly after an unexploded mortar shell detonated in Tengnoupal district, injuring three young boys.
According to police reports, the incident took place in Molnoi, a village inhabited by the Kuki tribe, where the children were reportedly playing with the old mortar shell.
The injured boys have been identified as Henugao Baite (10), Jamgunsei Baite (8), and Ngamguang Haokip (8).
Authorities stated that the minors were quickly transported to the 26 Battalion Hospital of the Assam Rifles for medical attention.
One child is currently in critical condition. Initial investigations indicate that the unexploded device was a 2-inch mortar shell, likely left from previous Kuki-Meitei conflicts in the region.
In another development, a hand grenade was found near the entrance of Liberal College at Luwangshangbam, under the jurisdiction of Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district on Saturday.
The Bomb Disposal Squad of Manipur Police retrieved the explosive and conducted a controlled detonation at Marjing Mamang Chingol. No group has claimed responsibility for this incident, and the motive remains unknown.
Additionally, a para shell bomb was discovered during excavation activities at the Maibam Chonjon Singh Stone Crusher in Khamaran village, under Sekmai Police Station. The bomb disposal team successfully defused and detonated the explosive at Tendongyan Maharabi Loukon.
