Mob Lynching in Bangladesh: Hindu Man Killed Over Blasphemy Allegations
Tragic Incident in Mymensingh District
A Hindu individual was brutally killed by a mob in the Mymensingh district of Bangladesh on Thursday night, following accusations of blasphemy, as reported by local police.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, a factory worker from the area, was reportedly beaten to death. Afterward, his body was tied to a tree and set ablaze, according to the duty officer at Bhaluka police station.
Authorities recovered Das' remains and transported them to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
The police indicated that this incident has heightened tensions in the region, prompting them to take measures to restore peace.
Muhammad Yunus, the head of the interim government in Bangladesh, expressed his strong condemnation of the lynching, stating that such violence has no place in the nation. He assured that those responsible for this atrocious act would face justice.
This violent act occurred amidst ongoing unrest following the death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, who died from gunshot wounds in a Singapore hospital on the same day. Hadi was a significant figure in the 2024 student protests that led to the removal of the previous government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Protests erupted in Dhaka and other cities, resulting in attacks on properties associated with the Awami League and offices of various newspapers.
