Stalin's Criticism of the Agriculture Budget

On Thursday, MK Stalin, the leader of the DMK and former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, expressed strong disapproval of the state's agriculture budget for 2026. He claimed that the budget failed to address the pressing concerns of farmers and instead served as a platform to praise the ruling government led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. In a post on social media, Stalin pointed out that critical issues such as the crop losses faced by farmers during the drought and Kuruvai farming season were overlooked.

Stalin emphasized that rather than tackling the drought crisis, the Tamil Nadu agriculture budget for 2026 was merely a tool for flattery towards the Chief Minister.

Allegations Against the Government

Targeting the government, he accused it of merely renaming existing schemes instead of implementing meaningful measures for farmers. He questioned whether the government believed that simply labeling its initiatives as 'victory' was sufficient to fulfill its responsibilities. Furthermore, Stalin asserted that the budget failed to provide relief to farmers in the Delta region whose crops were devastated during the Kuruvai season. He described the agriculture budget as hollow, stating it offered nothing for those farmers eagerly awaiting assistance from the government.

DMK's Commitment to Farmers

Stalin affirmed that his party would continue to raise farmers' concerns in the assembly. He stated that throughout the current assembly session, DMK members would vigorously advocate for the demands of Tamil Nadu's farmers. On the same day, Tamil Nadu's Agriculture Minister Vinod presented the 2026-27 agriculture budget in the assembly, announcing various measures aimed at increasing farmers' incomes, expanding irrigation, promoting sustainable farming, and strengthening crop insurance, along with the introduction of a new 'Tamil Nadu Soil Conservation Mission' with a budget of ₹600 crores.

Minister's Vision for Modern Agriculture

While presenting the budget, Vinod highlighted that through the expansion of irrigation, mechanization, precision farming, artificial intelligence, and data-driven governance, Tamil Nadu's agriculture is transitioning from subsistence farming to a modern, technology-driven, market-oriented sector. He noted that the budget was developed after consultations with farmers from Salem, Thanjavur, Vellore, Tirunelveli, Chennai, and surrounding districts, incorporating suggestions, ideas, and demands raised during these discussions.
