Overview of Mizoram's Demographic Data

Aizawl, Mar 23: In January 2026, Mizoram reported a total of 1,845 live births alongside 720 deaths, as per the latest figures from the Economics and Statistics department.

Out of the 1,845 live births, 1,127 occurred in urban settings, while 718 were recorded in rural regions. The report also indicated that there were 5 stillbirths during this timeframe.

The demographic data for January highlighted a slightly higher birth rate for females, with 949 girls born compared to 896 boys.

Aizawl district led the statistics with the highest number of live births at 732, followed by Lunglei district in the south with 292 and Lawngtlai with 170.

In terms of mortality, Mizoram documented 720 deaths in January, comprising 456 males and 264 females.

Among these, 479 deaths occurred in urban areas, while 241 were in rural locales. The data also noted the loss of 15 infants under one year and five children aged between one and five.

Throughout the previous year, Mizoram experienced a total of 21,873 births, maintaining a nearly equal gender ratio with 11,076 males and 10,797 females.

However, the mortality figures for 2025 revealed a stark gender imbalance, with 5,183 males and 2,897 females among the 8,080 total deaths recorded.

In 2025, the number of male deaths exceeded female deaths by 2,286, a trend that persisted in the January 2026 data.
