Aizawl, July 2: The government of Mizoram has officially introduced the MizoTaxi mobile application, a locally developed taxi aggregation service aimed at modernizing the state's public transportation system while ensuring government-sanctioned fare rates for commuters.
The launch event was presided over by Transport Minister Vanlalhlana at the Directorate Conference Hall of the Transport Department.
During the event, the minister emphasized that this launch marks a pivotal moment for public transport in Mizoram. He expressed pride in the fact that, while national taxi services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido operate throughout India, Mizoram now boasts its own platform, crafted by local entrepreneurs for the benefit of its residents.
In contrast to larger commercial aggregators that often set fares based on profit motives, MizoTaxi will allow passengers to book taxis at rates sanctioned by the State Transport Authority (STA), promoting affordability and transparency in travel, he stated. The platform also signifies Mizoram's commitment to keeping up with technological advancements seen in more developed areas.
Vanlalhlana acknowledged the vital role of taxi drivers, describing them as essential components of Mizoram's public transport network and as representatives of the state. He noted that visitors arriving at Lengpui Airport or Sairang Railway Station often meet taxi drivers first, making them the initial point of contact for newcomers.
The minister remarked that the rapid pace of technological change has revolutionized governance and public service delivery, necessitating the transport sector's adoption of digital solutions. He pointed out that passengers are increasingly favoring the ease of online bookings and digital payments, while taxi drivers frequently endure long waits for customers. The MizoTaxi app is anticipated to effectively bridge the gap between passengers and drivers.
Transport Director and STA Secretary R Lalrammawia explained that the app is designed to offer commuters a user-friendly platform for hiring taxis at officially approved rates. He clarified that MizoTaxi will retain six percent of each fare, with a minimum charge of Rs 5 and a maximum of Rs 10 per trip, which will solely cover the app's operational and maintenance costs.
This launch occurs despite initial resistance from certain taxi operators, including associations representing both four-wheeler and two-wheeler taxis, when the proposal was first announced.
