Mizoram Students Rally for Examination Reforms Amid NEET Controversy

Aizawl, July 22: On Wednesday, students from various educational institutions in Mizoram gathered for a peaceful protest in Aizawl, voicing their support for nationwide demonstrations regarding the alleged NEET exam paper leak. They are calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and advocating for comprehensive reforms in the examination system.
The protest took place outside Vanapa Hall and was also a show of support for activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike demanding accountability for the alleged irregularities in examinations.
Protesters emphasized the need for increased transparency, accountability, and fairness in competitive exams, arguing that ongoing controversies have diminished students' trust in the educational system.
During the demonstration, participants expressed solidarity with those affected by the NEET paper leak, highlighting that several students who tragically took their own lives amid the controversy were victims of systemic failures.
They chanted slogans emphasizing that the younger generation should not be overlooked.
Among the attendees was public figure Sangkimi Khiangte, who encouraged students to stand against injustices within the education system. She stated, "If we do not advocate for ourselves now, we will never achieve change in the Indian system. We are the future of this country, and our voices are significant."
A participating school student remarked that issues impacting youth and their futures often do not receive sufficient attention from policymakers and society at large. They questioned the lack of urgency from those in authority, noting that concerns apparent to school students have not been adequately addressed by older generations, highlighting the necessity for meaningful reforms to restore faith in the examination system.
The protest led to traffic disruptions in parts of Aizawl and was set to continue until 5 PM.
This demonstration is part of a broader wave of protests across the Northeast, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Meghalaya, where students are demanding greater integrity in competitive examinations and accountability regarding the alleged NEET paper leak.
The Aizawl protest is part of a growing national movement addressing alleged examination irregularities, with Wangchuk's hunger strike serving as a focal point for students advocating for reforms in the examination and recruitment processes.
