Mizoram Strawberry Farmer Honored as Global Agrifood Hero
Recognition for a Remarkable Farmer
ZT Lalrithangi (Mari-i) from Sangau in Lawngtlai district has been recognized as one of the ‘100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development’.
Aizawl, Sept 24: A strawberry farmer hailing from a secluded village in Mizoram has been honored by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as one of 100 women globally acknowledged for their significant contributions to agriculture and rural development.
ZT Lalrithangi (Mari-i), residing in Sangau, Lawngtlai district, has been selected as part of the ‘100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems and Rural Development’ initiative by the FAO, coinciding with the International Year of Women Farmers 2026.
Out of over 600 nominations from 131 nations, she stands out as one of only two women from India to receive this honor. Lalrithangi is set to accept her award at the World Food Forum, taking place at the FAO headquarters in Rome from October 12 to 16, marking her as the first Mizo to achieve this recognition.
Beginning her strawberry farming journey in 2024, she now cultivates two hectares of land, generating an annual income ranging from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10 lakh, as reported by the FAO.
In addition to selling fresh strawberries, she has diversified her products to include wine, dehydrated strawberries, and candy. Collaborations are also in progress with the Krishi Vigyan Kendra to produce strawberry juice.
The FAO highlighted Lalrithangi's selection due to her unwavering dedication, enthusiasm, and impactful contributions to strawberry farming and rural development.
Her achievements have not gone unnoticed locally, as she was awarded the title of Best Farmer in Lawngtlai district during the Horti Fair, Mizoram 2026.
The FAO’s initiative, 100 Women Heroes, aims to celebrate women who play vital roles in agrifood systems and rural communities, emphasizing their importance in agricultural development and enhancing livelihoods.
