Aizawl, May 29: During the term of the 15th Finance Commission from 2022 to 2026, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has allocated over Rs 339 crore for various development projects in Mizoram. This funding spans crucial areas such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and livelihood enhancement.

An official statement revealed that the state has utilized a total of Rs 339.06 crore through the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) and the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS-Roads).

Of this total, Rs 123.83 crore has been directed towards diverse projects under the SoNEC initiative, which includes improvements in medical and veterinary facilities, market infrastructure, educational institutions, cultural centers, sports facilities, and community development efforts throughout the state.

The NEC has also prioritized the enhancement of agriculture and related sectors by promoting initiatives such as wet rice cultivation, potato seed production, pig farming, poultry, fisheries, areca nut cultivation, passion fruit processing, and livestock development.

In the realms of tourism and culture, the Council has backed projects aimed at safeguarding and promoting Mizoram’s cultural and natural heritage. This includes the creation of cultural heritage centers, ecological parks, tourism circuits, and other infrastructure designed to enhance eco-tourism and cultural tourism in the region.

As part of the NESIDS-Roads initiative, six road projects worth Rs 277.99 crore have been initiated in Mizoram during this timeframe, with two projects costing Rs 25.19 crore already completed.

Among the key road projects, the NEC emphasized the upgrade of the Saiha-Lungbun-Tlangnuam-Haka Road, which is anticipated to improve connectivity between the southern districts of Mizoram and the Myanmar border, aligning with India’s Act East Policy.

The Council has also broadened youth and scientific outreach programs in the North East for the 2025-26 period, introducing initiatives like the Ashtalakshmi Youth Exchange Programme and NE-SPARKS.

Through the Ashtalakshmi Youth Exchange Programme, 581 students from various regions of the country visited leading institutions in the North East. In January of this year, Mizoram University welcomed 44 students from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep.
