Mizoram Government to Sign Peace Pact with Hmar Militants
Mizoram's Initiative for Peace
Aizawl, Dec 5: The Chief Minister of Mizoram, Lalduhoma, announced on Friday that his administration is preparing to finalize an agreement with a faction of Hmar militants aimed at restoring tranquility in the region.
Speaking at the Hmar Students' Association (HSA) general assembly and the Sikpui Ruoi festival held in Saipum, Kolasib district, near the Assam border, Lalduhoma revealed that discussions are ongoing with the Lalhmingthanga Sanate faction of the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic) to facilitate the reintegration of militants into society.
"We are optimistic about signing an agreement soon to bring peace back to Mizoram, especially in areas predominantly inhabited by the Hmar community," he stated.
Previously, the HPC (D) had sought the establishment of an autonomous district council under the sixth schedule of the Indian Constitution, which would involve the creation of a council for Hmar-majority villages in the northeastern region of Mizoram, adjacent to Manipur.
In contrast, another faction, led by H Zosangabera, had already reached a peace agreement with the Mizoram government in April 2018, resulting in the formation of the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) for Hmar-dominated villages in the northeastern part of the state.
The faction led by Sanate is primarily active in Assam's Cachar district.
