Severe Weather Causes Tragedy in Mizoram

Aizawl, June 3: The recent heavy rainfall in Mizoram has led to five fatalities due to landslides, house collapses, and other related disasters, as reported by the state's Disaster Management and Rehabilitation department on Tuesday.

According to the department's data, Champhai district recorded three deaths, while Aizawl and Serchhip districts each reported one death, all attributed to the collapse of structures caused by landslides and flash floods.

In total, the state has experienced 552 landslides, with 152 houses either collapsing or sustaining damage due to the relentless rain over the past ten days.

As a result of the landslides and fissures, 198 families have been forced to leave their homes, and an additional 92 families evacuated due to flooding.

Champhai district, located in eastern Mizoram and bordering Myanmar, has been particularly hard-hit, suffering three fatalities, 209 landslides, damage to nine houses, and the evacuation of 14 families.

Serchhip district reported one death, 75 landslides, damage to 27 houses, and 132 families abandoning their homes due to the adverse weather conditions.

Aizawl district experienced 18 landslides, with 13 houses damaged and 17 others abandoned.

Other districts also faced significant challenges, with Khawzawl reporting 75 landslides, Lunglei 60, and Siaha 53 landslides.

In Siaha district alone, at least 29 houses were either destroyed or damaged, while Kolasib district saw 23, Lunglei 18, and Khawzawl 9 houses affected.

Due to the ongoing rain, all schools in the state, except those in Saitual district, remained closed on Tuesday.

Officials noted that over a hundred trucks carrying essential goods were stranded in Serchhip due to the weather conditions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Aizawl received 253.7 mm of rainfall in the last three days, with Khawzawl and Siaha districts receiving 248.33 mm and 241.5 mm, respectively.
