Aizawl, July 6: The state of Mizoram has successfully completed the biometric enrollment process for all 1,679 refugees from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh. Additionally, the enrollment for Myanmar refugees is nearly finished, with a completion rate of 98.88%, as reported by officials from the state Home department.
Officials confirmed that the last group of 1,361 refugees from Bangladesh residing in Lawngtlai district has been enrolled, marking the conclusion of the enrollment process for all individuals from that country.
Previously, enrollment had been finalized for 235 refugees in Serchhip district, 76 in Lunglei district, and seven in Aizawl district. The process in Lawngtlai took longer due to its status as a border district, which also accommodates a significant number of refugees from Myanmar, including several remote areas.
Since late November 2022, thousands have fled from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts to Mizoram following military operations against the Kuki-Chin National Liberation Army (KCNA). Reports indicated that civilians were affected during these operations, prompting many families to seek safety across the border.
In parallel, the biometric registration for Myanmar refugees is also nearing its conclusion. As of Friday, authorities have enrolled 29,247 out of 29,577 Myanmar nationals currently residing in Mizoram, leaving just 330 individuals yet to be registered.
This enrollment initiative has been completed across seven districts: Champhai, Aizawl, Lunglei, Siaha, Mamit, Khawzawl, and Saitual, with Serchhip district achieving a remarkable 99.86% completion rate.
Champhai, which has the highest number of Myanmar refugees at 12,083, was among the first districts to finish the enrollment process. In contrast, Hnahthial district, home to 622 Myanmar refugees, has reached 90.51% coverage.
The biometric enrollment initiative commenced in the last week of July 2025, following directives from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. Officials from the state home department have indicated that the process is now in its final stages and is expected to conclude shortly.
