Mizoram CM Faces Election Code Violation Allegations
Election Code Breach Allegations Against Mizoram Leaders
Aizawl, Nov 3: Allegations regarding violations of the election code have been submitted to the Election Commission of India concerning Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma and his advisor, Dr. Lorrain Lalpekliana Chinzah, as stated by Ethel Rothangpuii, the state's joint chief electoral officer.
According to Rothangpuii, these allegations stem from a complaint made by the opposition party, Mizo National Front (MNF), which accused the two officials of contravening the Election Model Code of Conduct (EMCC) during the Dampa assembly bye-election campaign. Both Lalduhoma and Chinzah have received show-cause notices, and the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has provided its response to the chief electoral officer's office.
The office will review this response and will forward the case to the Election Commission of India on Monday for a conclusive ruling,” Rothangpuii added.
The complaint, filed by advocate Zothansangi Hmar on behalf of the MNF, claims that during a campaign event at West Phaileng village on October 21, the Chief Minister announced a new water supply initiative worth Rs 770 crore intended for Reiek village.
This project, which includes the construction of a dam, aims to supply water to Reiek and 14 adjacent villages. Additionally, the complaint alleges that Dr. Chinzah conducted free medical camps in Parvatui and Phulpui West villages on October 17, distributing medicines at no charge.
Hmar pointed out that these actions breached specific sections of the EMCC, particularly Chapter II (j) and Chapter VIII, clauses (3) and (14). The complaint has been forwarded to the district election officer (DEO) of Mamit district.
