Mizoram's Recognition as Ginger Capital

Aizawl, Jan 14: The NITI Aayog has officially recognized Mizoram as the 'Ginger Capital of India'. Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed that this acknowledgment reflects the relentless effort, commitment, and creativity of the farmers in the region.

During the inauguration of the Ginger Processing Unit at the Sairang Horticulture Centre, located approximately 21 km from Aizawl, the Chief Minister remarked that despite Mizoram being a Union Territory/State for around 54 years and primarily an agricultural region, no specific crop had previously garnered notable acclaim.

He stated, "Mizoram is now being recognized as the 'Ginger Capital of India'. This increasing acknowledgment is a direct result of the dedication shown by our farmers."

The Chief Minister noted that ginger farming has significantly improved the livelihoods of many families, enhancing their purchasing power and benefiting local businesses.

With the cessation of free distribution, a moral shift is occurring, emphasizing the value of earning through hard work, he added.

He announced that ginger procurement will recommence on February 2, with plans to introduce locally-made machines for slicing and drying ginger at collection centers, which will greatly assist farmers in processing their produce.

Highlighting the advantages of organic farming, the Chief Minister stated that it gives Mizoram a competitive edge over other states, and the government will focus more on promoting organic practices.

Additionally, he mentioned the potential of passion fruit and indicated that efforts will be made to enhance its cultivation on a broader scale.

The recent declaration by NITI Aayog acknowledges Mizoram's reputation for producing high-quality ginger and its impressive growth in ginger production in recent years.

According to the annual report from the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board (MAMB), over 3.38 crore kg of ginger was procured in 2025, with the total support price of Rs 137.72 crore fully disbursed to farmers.
