Mizoram and Assam Work Towards Resolving Border Dispute

Aizawl, July 29: The governments of Mizoram and Assam are still in the process of determining a date for their next official discussions regarding the ongoing border conflict. Both states are maintaining close communication to arrange this meeting, which is expected to take place in Aizawl.
An official from the Mizoram Home Department indicated that there has been regular consultation between officials from both states, expressing hope that a suitable date will be established soon.
“We have proposed several potential dates for the upcoming talks and are currently waiting for feedback from the Assam Government,” the official stated.
This upcoming meeting was initially agreed upon during the last round of discussions held in Guwahati on April 25 of the previous year, where both parties decided that the next meeting would occur in Aizawl. However, the scheduling has been delayed for over a year, partly due to the Assam Assembly elections that took place in April.
Despite the extended wait, officials noted that the agreement reached during the Guwahati discussions to maintain the current status along the inter-state boundary has largely been upheld, with no significant violations reported.
The 164.6-km boundary between Mizoram and Assam has remained mostly calm in recent years, although there have been sporadic incidents in certain disputed areas. The two governments have been gradually making progress in resolving this long-standing boundary issue through various political and official interactions.
The need for a definitive resolution became more urgent following a violent clash on July 26, 2021, near Vairengte at the Assam border. This confrontation was sparked by the alleged incursion of over 200 Assam Police personnel, led by an Inspector General, into the disputed territory, resulting in a firefight that left several officers dead and many others injured.
In the aftermath of the 2021 violence, both governments have ramped up their dialogue efforts to alleviate tensions and pursue a negotiated resolution. Since August 2021, Mizoram and Assam have conducted four rounds of ministerial talks, alongside numerous official meetings and virtual discussions.
Additionally, the Chief Ministers of both states have convened three times to address the border issue, demonstrating a sustained political commitment to resolving one of the longest-standing inter-state disputes in the Northeast region.
