Mitch McConnell Discharged from Hospital, Yet to be Cleared for Work
Senator McConnell's Health Update
US Senator Mitch McConnell has been released from the hospital, but he has not received medical clearance to resume his duties, as per his doctors' latest statement. This marks the second update since the 84-year-old Republican from Kentucky was hospitalized in mid-June following a fall and what was described by his office as a mild pneumonia case. McConnell has been away from the Senate for several weeks, leading to ongoing speculation regarding his health status.
In a statement shared by his office on Monday, McConnell mentioned that he is actively engaged in rehabilitation. He stated, "I'm still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors' orders." Along with this statement, a new photograph was released showing him seated next to his wife, Elaine Chao, who previously served as Transportation Secretary. This is only the second image made public since his hospitalization on June 14.
Despite the release of the photograph, some political commentators and social media users have raised concerns about the absence of video footage or public appearances from McConnell during his recovery. Gun violence prevention advocate Shannon Watts expressed skepticism on social media, stating, "Sorry but staged photos in which McConnell is propped up in a variety of different colored business shirts is not proof of life." Former Obama adviser Dan Pfeiffer also noted the lack of public engagement, commenting, "The fact that he won't talk to a reporter or even do a video is pretty telling." Conservative lawyer George Conway remarked, "Five seconds of video is all it would take." Democratic strategist Mike Nellis criticized the latest update, suggesting that if McConnell is undergoing rigorous physical therapy, there should be evidence of it, questioning why he cannot make a simple call to a reporter or share a video confirming his well-being.
Some conservative users on social media have also expressed doubts, with comparisons being made to the film 'Weekend at Bernie's,' where a deceased character is posed to appear alive. Gunther Eagleman tweeted, "Mitch McConnell is still missing... His staff refuses to tell us where he is or how he is doing." Others commented on McConnell's appearance, with one user stating, "That doesn't look anything like Mitch," while another questioned, "How is it possible he looks better after nearly flatlining? Why no video, Mitch?" Additionally, McConnell's office shared a statement from his attending physician, indicating that the senator has been following a rigorous physical therapy regimen, which includes multiple daily sessions aimed at rebuilding strength and minimizing the risk of future falls. However, it was reiterated that he has not yet been medically cleared to leave the rehabilitation facility or return to his office.
