Discovery of the Body

Spanish authorities announced on Thursday that the remains of a 20-year-old University of Alabama student, who had gone missing during a trip to Barcelona, have been discovered. The deceased has been identified as James Gracey, also referred to as Jimmy. However, the cause of death has yet to be disclosed by officials. Gracey was reported missing earlier this week after a night out with friends. The Mossos d'Esquadra, the regional police, confirmed that the body was located near the nightclub district, as reported by various news outlets. They provided updates via social media but withheld additional details regarding the circumstances of his death.

Where Was The Body Found?

Authorities revealed that the body was retrieved from waters adjacent to the Port Olímpic marina, not far from the nightclub where Gracey was last seen. According to reports from La Vanguardia, a Spanish dive team discovered the remains while conducting a search near the shoreline. Gracey, originally from Elmhurst, Illinois, had traveled to Barcelona for spring break. Surveillance footage captured him exiting the Shoko nightclub around 3 am on Tuesday, after which he did not return to his lodging, prompting a police search.

Investigation Details

Previously, police had reported that Gracey’s wallet was found floating in the sea near Somorrostro beach, close to the nightclub. A Catalan police unit recovered it during their search efforts. Officers investigated whether he had entered the water after leaving the club but found no evidence at that time. A source informed CNN that the search results were “negative.” Investigators examined CCTV footage from outside the nightclub, revealing that Gracey left with another individual. Reports indicated that he did not depart alone, but the identity of the person accompanying him remains unknown.

According to Fox News, Gracey had a brief conversation with a brown-haired American woman shortly before his disappearance. Authorities have not disclosed any suspects at this stage. Police established a security perimeter at Port Olímpic marina to search for further evidence. On Thursday evening, a worker near the beach alerted officers to a specific location, prompting them to cordon off the area with crime scene tape and bring in a vehicle for further investigation.

While authorities have not dismissed the possibility of foul play, they have not confirmed it either. The fact that Gracey left with someone has raised concerns during the investigation. During the search, police also recovered Gracey’s phone. Family spokesperson Noreen Heron stated that officers found it after detaining another individual. However, Gracey’s aunt, Beth O’Reilly, expressed uncertainty about the device's status, saying, “We don’t know whether it was lost, stolen, whatever.” Gracey was last seen wearing a white shirt, dark pants, and a chain with a gold rhinestone cross, as reported by NBC News. The investigation remains active as authorities seek to establish the precise cause of his death.
