Miss Israel 2024 Shares Discomforting Encounter with Politician's Wife
Unexpected Interaction with Rama Duwaji
Melanie Shiraz Asor, the reigning Miss Israel 2024, recently recounted a surprising experience with Rama Duwaji, the spouse of New York politician Zohran Mamdani. Asor described how the initial cordiality of their meeting turned uncomfortable after she disclosed her identity. In a post on Instagram, she noted that the atmosphere shifted dramatically once she identified herself as Israeli and Jewish, leading to a noticeable change in Duwaji's demeanor.
Reflecting on the encounter, Asor expressed, “Was I surprised by the outcome? Not particularly. It is easy to apologize without meaningfully changing one’s behavior. It is easy to claim opposition to dehumanization in principle, but far more difficult to embody that in practice.” She emphasized that while Duwaji remained polite, the lack of willingness to engage in a meaningful dialogue was apparent. Asor approached the conversation with an open mind, hoping for a respectful exchange, but felt that her openness was not reciprocated.
Asor further remarked on the broader implications of such disconnects, stating, “And that, perhaps, is the more telling point: how often this disconnect appears, and how normalized it has become.” She also shared a video discussing Duwaji’s previous social media posts, suggesting a reluctance to engage in constructive dialogue. In her recounting, she mentioned, “For those asking, I told her I was Miss Israel, that I’m Israeli and Jewish. I also told her I was disappointed to see the content that she was posting, liking, and promoting, but that I would be open to having a productive conversation with her about it.”
The incident sparked a flurry of reactions online, with many supporters commending Asor for her composure. One user expressed, “I love you, Melanie, you are a great, beautiful person.” Another added, “Exactly, easy to post appeasing words, but face to face is when we see the truth! Very proud of how you handled yourself!” Additional comments included, “Wow. You are a queen. Thank you for always standing up with so much grace. You make us all very proud,” and “Whoo hoo!! You are brave, and that's why you are Miss Israel! You deserve the crown.”
