Temporary Suspension of Road Blockade

Itanagar, July 15: Three organizations representing the Mising community have decided to temporarily halt their indefinite road blockade along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. This decision comes after the chief ministers of both states intervened, promising prompt action regarding the murders of two laborers.

The blockade, initiated by the Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), Mising Mimag Kebang (MMK), and Takam Mising Mime Kebang (TMMK), began early Tuesday as a protest against the killings of Prabash Doley, 22, from Dhemaji, and Shankar Pegu, 29, from Biswanath.

This protest significantly disrupted traffic at major entry points such as Banderdewa, Hollongi, Likabali, Roing (Shantipur), Namsai (Dirak), and Gerukamukh.

In a statement, TMPK announced the suspension of the blockade following assurances from both the Assam and Arunachal Pradesh governments, along with senior police officials.

Chukhu Apa, the Inspector General of Police for Arunachal Pradesh, confirmed that legal proceedings have commenced in both murder cases and urged the public to maintain peace.

He emphasized that these incidents are isolated criminal acts rather than targeted assaults on any specific community, and all district Superintendents of Police have been instructed to ensure the safety of migrant workers.

Compensation for the families of the victims will be provided through a state scheme, and investigations are being expedited.

In the first case, Doley was reportedly murdered in the East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The suspect, Tai John, has been arrested under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), with police recovering blood-stained weapons and clothing. A chargesheet will be filed after forensic analysis.

In the second incident, Pegu, a laborer from Borajuli village in Assam’s Biswanath district, was allegedly shot by his employer, Tadar Bhai, in Roing, Lower Dibang Valley district on July 13.

The accused is currently in custody and faces charges under Section 103(1) of the BNS and Section 27(1) of the Arms Act.

Officials have indicated that a joint meeting involving all stakeholder organizations is anticipated within the next three days to oversee the progress of the investigations.

TMPK has reiterated its commitment to closely monitor developments and has called for calm and unity within the community.

The temporary suspension of the blockade provides a brief relief after a day marked by disrupted interstate connectivity and escalating community tensions.
