IOA President Commends Chanu's Inspirational Journey
PT Usha took to social media platform X to share her congratulations with Chanu, highlighting her remarkable consistency at the Commonwealth Games. She stated, "Champion! Many congratulations to @mirabai_chanu. What an inspirational athlete she is. Three consecutive gold medals at the CWG. The first time we heard the national anthem in Glasgow and hopefully many more times over the next week!"
In a conversation with the media following Chanu's victory, Usha expressed her joy, stating that the weightlifter's performance filled the nation with pride. "I am thrilled to see Mirabai Chanu lifting weights, and it’s a significant moment for me and all Indians that she won the Commonwealth Gold. She was confident in her performance, and I am so happy; it’s a proud moment for all Indians," she remarked.
Chanu's Commanding Performance
Chanu's victory was complemented by her fellow athlete Chanambam Rishikanta Singh, who secured a silver medal in the men's 60kg event, marking India's second medal in weightlifting and the first silver of the Games.
From the beginning, Chanu dominated her competition, starting with a Commonwealth record lift of 85kg in the snatch, which established her strong lead in the event.
Although she faced a challenge during her initial clean and jerk attempt at 82kg, she quickly bounced back, successfully lifting the weight on her second try. She then achieved another lift of 85kg on her third attempt, setting a new Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth record in this discipline.
The 30-year-old concluded her event by lifting 105kg, securing the gold medal and completing a historic trifecta of Commonwealth Games titles.
A Historic Start for India
Chanu's victory marks her as the first Indian to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medals in weightlifting, ensuring that India's national anthem was played for the first time at the Glasgow Games.
India began its medal tally with para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's bronze, followed by Rishikanta Singh's silver, and Chanu's gold brought the total to three medals, signaling a perfect start for the Indian weightlifting team.
