Mirabai Chanu's Remarkable Achievement
The Indian weightlifting team has returned to New Delhi following a triumphant outing at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Mirabai Chanu, an Olympic medalist, expressed her pride in securing Gold, marking her third consecutive victory for India and her fourth medal overall since the 2014 Commonwealth Games, where she won Silver.
Chanu's Emotional Return
"I am thrilled to have won a medal for India, and as a proud representative of Manipur, I feel accomplished for my country," Chanu stated upon her arrival in Delhi. She received a warm welcome at the airport from the Delhi Meetei Coordinating Committee.
Coach's Praise and Future Goals
Vijay Sharma, the Chief National Coach of the Indian weightlifting team, commended the athletes' performance and highlighted Chanu's extraordinary feat. "I am very pleased with our team's results. Mirabai stands out as the only woman globally to have earned medals in four consecutive Commonwealth Games, a testament to her discipline and commitment," Sharma remarked.
He also mentioned that the team's focus will now shift to the Asian Games, stating, "Our primary goal is to secure a medal at the Asian Games, and we will work hard towards that aim."
Joy Among Fellow Medallists
Gyaneshwari Yadav, who earned a silver medal in the women's 53kg category, expressed her joy and gratitude for the support from fans. "Winning this medal makes me very happy, and I appreciate everyone who came to welcome us," Yadav shared.
Rishikanta Singh, who took home silver in the men's 60kg category, noted that this achievement has inspired him to improve in future competitions. "I feel more motivated for upcoming events, and my next goal is to excel even further," he stated.
Lovepreet Singh, who secured silver in the men's +110kg heavyweight category, mentioned that his focus is now on the Asian Games starting next month in Japan. "My aim is to prepare thoroughly for the Asian Games and win a medal," Lovepreet added.
India's Weightlifting Medal Tally
India concluded its weightlifting campaign at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 with an impressive total of eight medals: one gold, six silver, and one bronze.
The medal winners included Mirabai Chanu, who clinched gold in the women's 48kg category, while Gyaneshwari Yadav and Harjinder Kaur earned silver in the women's 53kg and 69kg categories, respectively. Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Lovepreet Singh also secured silver medals in the men's 60kg, 65kg, 79kg, and +110kg categories. Additionally, Bindyarani Devi contributed a bronze medal in the women's 58kg category.
