Mirabai Chanu Achieves Historic Hat-Trick at Commonwealth Games 2026
Ministers Celebrate Chanu's Remarkable Achievement
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and BJP MP Anurag Thakur extended their congratulations to weightlifter Mirabai Chanu for her outstanding gold medal victory at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026. Thakur recognized her as the first Indian weightlifter to secure a hat-trick of gold medals across three Commonwealth Games.
In a post on X, Mandaviya praised Chanu for her impressive dedication, consistency, and strength. He expressed, "A hat-trick of GOLD medals! Congratulations to @mirabai_chanu on clinching the Gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Your unwavering dedication, remarkable consistency, and extraordinary strength continue to make India proud on the global stage."
Thakur also shared his congratulations, stating that India's "Gold Saga begins" with her triumph in the women's 49 kg weightlifting category. He noted, "The Gold Saga begins. Mirabai Chanu wins the first gold medal for India in the #CWG2026 in Women's 49Kg Weightlifting. She has become India's first weightlifter to score a hat-trick of Gold Medals in the Commonwealth Games. Her unwavering dedication and commitment to the sports continues to make our country proud. Chanu's Record-Breaking Performance
Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu secured her third Commonwealth Games gold medal by lifting 105 kg in the clean and jerk segment of the women's 48 kg final, marking India's first gold medal at the CWG 2026.
Chanu had previously achieved gold medals in the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Earlier, she set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch category. After an unsuccessful first attempt at 82 kg in the clean and jerk, she successfully lifted 82 kg on her second attempt and then raised the bar to 85 kg on her third attempt, establishing a new Games and Commonwealth record.
Chanu then attempted 105 kg, successfully lifting it overhead, thereby securing the gold medal and completing her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals. With this victory, India also claimed its first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games.
