Michael Vaughan Advocates for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Inclusion in Indian Team
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Shines in IPL 2026
Michael Vaughan, the former captain of England and now a cricket analyst, has called on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to expedite the inclusion of Rajasthan Royals' young talent, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, into the national squad for the upcoming tour of England. This recommendation follows Sooryavanshi's remarkable performance during the IPL 2026 match against Chennai Super Kings on March 30 in Guwahati.
Sooryavanshi electrified the Barsapara Cricket Stadium with an impressive innings of 52 runs off just 17 deliveries, which included 4 fours and 5 sixes, achieving a phenomenal strike rate of 305.88. His rapid half-century, completed in only 17 balls, ranks as the joint-third fastest in IPL history, aiding the Royals in successfully chasing down a target of 128 runs and securing an eight-wicket victory over CSK.
The 15-year-old cricketer showcased exceptional skill and confidence, leaving both fans and cricket experts in awe as he dismantled the CSK bowling lineup, making a compelling case for his selection in the national team.
Debate Over National Team Selection
Sooryavanshi's explosive display against CSK has ignited discussions regarding his potential promotion to the Indian cricket team. In a conversation on Cricbuzz, Vaughan expressed that Sooryavanshi should be included in the squad for the England tour to gain valuable experience and acclimatize to the team dynamics.
"When will he make his Indian debut? I know it’s early in the IPL, but with a white-ball tour to England approaching, I would advocate for his inclusion on that trip," Vaughan stated.
He emphasized the importance of introducing Sooryavanshi to the Indian cricket environment, suggesting that even if he doesn't play immediately, being part of the tour would be beneficial. Vaughan questioned whether a 15-year-old could travel on such tours, highlighting the need for young talent to be nurtured.
Eligibility and Experience
Having recently turned 15, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi meets the International Cricket Council's (ICC) minimum age requirement for international cricket, which is set at 15 years, with exceptions for younger players under special circumstances.
Vaughan further elaborated on the necessity of gradually integrating Sooryavanshi into the Indian team setup, stating, "I would provide him with some experience within the Indian team. He is certainly good enough to play, and I have no doubts about that."
Sooryavanshi has already represented India at the U19 level, participating in the U19 Asia Cup last year and the World Cup this year. He played a pivotal role in India's U19 World Cup victory, finishing as the tournament's second-highest run-scorer with 439 runs, including a remarkable 175 in the final against England, along with three fifties, boasting an average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49 across seven matches.
