Mexico Triumphs Over Suriname in Concacaf Gold Cup Match

Match Overview

On June 19 in Texas, Mexico secured its second victory in the group stage of the Concacaf Gold Cup, defeating Suriname 2-0 at AT&T Stadium.

Under the guidance of Javier Aguirre, the Mexican team displayed strong performance from the outset. Although they couldn't convert their dominance into goals during the first half, they consistently posed threats to the Suriname defense.

In the opening 45 minutes, Mexico controlled possession and created several chances through players like Alexis Vega, Julian Quinones, and Roberto Alvarado, but they were unable to find the back of the net.

Suriname, on the other hand, maintained a solid defensive structure and looked for counterattack opportunities, but did not manage to trouble goalkeeper Angel Malagon significantly. The deadlock was broken in the 57th minute when Cesar Montes scored with a header from a corner kick, putting Mexico ahead 1-0.

Just six minutes later, Montes doubled the lead by converting a rebound from another set piece, becoming the standout player of the match with his two goals. Although Mexico celebrated a third goal by Cesar 'Chino' Huerta, it was ruled offside.

With this win, Mexico now has six points and will face Costa Rica next on Sunday, a crucial match for securing the top spot in their group.

In another match, Costa Rica triumphed over the Dominican Republic with a score of 2-1. Joao Urbaez opened the scoring for the Dominican Republic in the 16th minute, marking their first lead in Gold Cup history after capitalizing on a rebound from Keylor Navas's save.

Costa Rica equalized just before halftime with a penalty converted by Manfred Ugalde in the 44th minute. The winning goal came in the 85th minute when Ugalde assisted a right-footed shot from the middle of the box, sealing the victory for Costa Rica.

Both goalkeepers, Keylor Navas and Xavier Valdez, made four saves each during the match.

The Dominican Republic will remain in Arlington, Texas, to face Suriname on Sunday.
