Srinagar: On Saturday, Mehbooba Mufti, the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), expressed her appreciation to the Chief Ministers of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka for their principled opposition to the Waqf Amendment Act.

Mufti, who previously served as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, sent similar letters to Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal, M K Stalin of Tamil Nadu, and Siddaramaiah of Karnataka.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, she stated, "I have reached out to @MamataOfficial ji, @mkstalin ji & @siddaramaiah ji to convey my heartfelt thanks for their courageous and principled stance against the Waqf Amendment Bill. In a time when dissent is increasingly suppressed in India, their clear voices are refreshing."

Mufti further noted, "As residents of Jammu and Kashmir, the only Muslim-majority area in India, we draw comfort and motivation from your steadfast position during these trying times."

She also shared the letters on her X account.

Mufti highlighted that for over a decade, India has been experiencing a rising tide of majoritarianism that threatens its foundational values of diversity and plurality. While many citizens oppose this trend, those who promote division and hatred currently wield power, targeting the Constitution and the secular framework of the nation.

She pointed out that minorities, especially Muslims, have suffered the most, particularly through the arbitrary implementation of new Waqf laws that infringe upon their religious freedoms.

Mufti remarked that these recent actions resonate with past injustices, such as the revocation of Jammu and Kashmir's special status, and reflect a broader trend of systematic rights erosion.

She concluded by stating, "In these challenging times, your bravery and clarity shine as a rare source of hope. Alongside a few principled leaders, you have advocated for justice and the inclusive vision of India. I wish to express my profound respect and the gratitude of many who feel marginalized and voiceless."

The PDP leader emphasized that with their ongoing support and leadership, the nation can reclaim its constitutional values and shared future.
