Meghalaya's Tourism Unaffected by Recent Murder Case

The murder of Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra has not impacted Meghalaya's tourism sector, with officials reporting a rise in visitor numbers. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh assures that the state remains a welcoming destination, projecting significant growth by year-end. Despite media scrutiny labeling the area as 'Crime-prone Hills,' the government has taken steps to protect the state's image, including legal actions against misleading reports. As investigations continue, authorities are focused on restoring public trust and ensuring that isolated incidents do not overshadow Meghalaya's reputation as a peaceful tourist haven.

Tourism Resilience Amidst Tragedy

Shillong, June 14: The recent murder of Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra has not deterred the thriving tourism industry in Meghalaya. State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has reported a steady increase in tourist arrivals, particularly in popular spots like Sohra (Cherrapunji), which remain unaffected by the incident.

Lyngdoh reassured the public and media that tourism is on the rise, projecting that visitor numbers could reach 20 lakh by year-end, especially with the upcoming Cherry Blossom Festival. “Tourism has not declined; in fact, we are seeing more visitors,” he emphasized.

Following the discovery of Raja’s body, some media outlets labeled Meghalaya as "Crime-prone Hills," which sparked backlash on social media. However, after threats of legal action from the state government, several media organizations and even the victim’s family have publicly apologized. The Minister remarked, “This issue is resolved,” highlighting that such isolated incidents should not tarnish the state's reputation.

As the investigation progresses, East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem noted that the five suspects, including Sonam Raghuvanshi, are cooperating but have not expressed remorse. Police are continuing their interrogations to recover missing evidence, including the victim’s gold chain, ring, and mobile devices.

Reports indicate that the suspects had destroyed all four mobile phones belonging to the couple, yet investigators are striving to recover any digital traces. Additionally, authorities disclosed that the accused had a contingency plan to escape to Dawki if their initial attempt had failed. Next week, all five suspects will be taken to the crime scene at Weisawdong for further investigation, and statements from both families will be documented.

As the inquiry deepens, officials are dedicated to rebuilding public trust and ensuring that this incident does not mar Meghalaya’s image as a serene and inviting tourist destination.
