He praised the progress made in Meghalaya's sports sector under Chief Minister Conrad Sangma's leadership and underscored the North East's growing significance in India's sports landscape. High-Level Review Meeting on National Games

On Saturday, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, led a significant review meeting to evaluate Meghalaya's readiness for the upcoming 39th National Games scheduled for 2027.


During the session, Mandaviya highlighted that these Games should not only be a premier sporting event but also a showcase of Meghalaya's rich cultural heritage and the diversity of the North-Eastern region. He stressed the need for world-class sporting facilities, effective organization, and extensive public engagement to ensure the Games become a landmark occasion for Indian sports.


Focus on Sustainability and Awareness

Mandaviya stated, "Sustainability and diversity are our core messages for the 39th National Games in Meghalaya in 2027."


He also pointed out the importance of using the National Games as a platform for talent scouting and raising awareness about the dangers of doping among athletes.


Infrastructure Review and Development

The Minister reviewed the progress of sports infrastructure across the North Eastern states. A detailed presentation was provided on the status of various sports projects, venue readiness, and overall preparations for the 39th National Games, including timelines for completion and areas needing attention.


New Sports Facilities in Meghalaya

During his three-day visit to the North East, Mandaviya inaugurated a modern Multipurpose Integrated Sports Indoor Hall in Shillong. He expressed that this facility would create new opportunities for young athletes and significantly contribute to the sports landscape in Meghalaya and the North East.


Additionally, he announced plans for a world-class High-altitude training center, with an investment of Rs 150 crore, to be established in Meghalaya soon.


Acknowledgment of Progress in Sports

Dr. Mandaviya commended Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, for the remarkable advancements in the state's sports sector over the past eight years. He noted Sangma's comprehensive efforts to enhance the sports ecosystem, including promoting sports science and modern training methods.


North East's Role in Indian Sports

The Union Minister emphasized the growing significance of the North East in India's sports arena, stating that Meghalaya's initiative to host the National Games is a source of national pride. He acknowledged the region's consistent production of exceptional sporting talent and the potential for the Games to inspire young athletes while showcasing the North East's rich culture and hospitality.


Government's Commitment to Sports Development

Mandaviya highlighted the Centre's renewed focus on sports development in the North East, noting that the size of a state's population is no longer a barrier to receiving sporting resources. He pointed out that while the North East comprises about 4% of India's population, it hosts nearly 25% of all Khelo India Centres, reflecting the government's commitment to harnessing the region's sporting potential.
