Meghalaya Police Act Against Online Threats Following Tourist Murder
Police Response to Online Harassment
Guwahati, June 9: In response to the murder of Indore tourist Raja Raghuvanshi in Sohra, East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya Police have initiated a suo motu case against individuals spreading harmful online messages aimed at Meghalayans living outside the state.
During a press conference in Shillong on Monday, police officials reported a significant rise in online threats and derogatory remarks directed at the local population following the tragic incident.
David Marak, DIG of the Eastern Range, stated, “We have noted some individuals making offensive comments about the people of Meghalaya. We are taking this matter seriously and have registered a suo motu case against those who posted harmful messages online. We are also keeping a close watch on instances of misinformation.”
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, who also spoke at the briefing, emphasized the need for improved tourist registration across the state.
To enhance transparency and proper visitor tracking, homestay owners and hotel operators have been instructed to meticulously register tourists.
“We have directed homestay owners and hoteliers to ensure comprehensive registration of visitors, utilizing the Tourism app to relay visitor information to local police and traditional village councils known as Dorbar Shnong,” Tynsong explained.
On the murder investigation, Tynsong mentioned that it is still in its early phases, with many details yet to be uncovered.
He referred to the recent surrender of Sonam Raghuwanshi, the deceased's wife, and the apprehension of three contract killers associated with the case.
“The actual investigation has just commenced. We are committed to uncovering the truth. Updates will be provided as the legal process unfolds. We urge everyone to respect the judicial process,” he stated.
Police have identified Sonam as a key suspect in the murder, with three assailants—Akash, Anand, and Vishal Singh Chauhan—reportedly working under the direction of Raj Kushwaha, who is alleged to be Sonam’s accomplice.
While the assailants were in Shillong, Kushwaha was said to be outside of Meghalaya.
Marak confirmed Sonam’s surrender at Nandganj Police Station in Ghazipur on Sunday evening and noted that she is currently in the safe custody of Uttar Pradesh Police. Legal procedures are being followed for her transfer and formal statement, he added.
