Meghalaya Government to Introduce New Law Addressing Influx Issues
New Legislative Measures in Meghalaya
Shillong, August 8: The government of Meghalaya is set to propose a new law aimed at tackling the challenges related to the influx of people into the state, particularly in light of the difficulties faced with the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).
On Thursday, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma announced that the administration is developing a robust system to oversee the situation, taking into account law enforcement and the evolving circumstances in neighboring Assam and Bangladesh.
“Monitoring the overall situation regarding the movement of people into and out of the state is crucial, especially considering the developments in Assam and Bangladesh. Therefore, it is vital for us to establish a strong mechanism to ensure law and order,” Sangma explained to the media.
The Chief Minister emphasized the importance of consulting various stakeholders before making the details public.
“We encountered some challenges with the MRSSA. Consequently, after discussions with the Law Department and consultations with senior ministers and officials, we are working on a new approach,” he added.
Sangma also recently updated the Union Home Minister about the situation along the Assam border and the India-Bangladesh border, underscoring the significance of internal security measures.
