Shillong, May 30: During a review meeting on Saturday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya expressed his approval of Meghalaya's preparations for the upcoming 39th National Games, scheduled for next year. He announced the establishment of a high-altitude training facility in the state, with an investment of Rs 150 crore.

Mandaviya stated, "I have assessed the ongoing infrastructure and preparatory efforts for the 39th National Games in Meghalaya, and I am confident that the event in 2027 will set a new standard in its history," as reported by the Sports Ministry.

He emphasized the importance of using the National Games as a platform to raise awareness about doping, stressing that athletes need to understand its consequences.

The Minister also evaluated the development of sports infrastructure across the Northeastern states.

During the meeting, a comprehensive presentation was provided regarding the status of sports infrastructure projects, venue readiness, and overall preparations for the Games, including completion timelines and areas needing special attention.

On a three-day visit to the Northeast, Mandaviya inaugurated a multipurpose integrated sports indoor hall, stating that this facility would create new opportunities for young athletes and significantly influence the future of sports in Meghalaya and the broader North Eastern region.

He highlighted the government's renewed commitment to sports development in the Northeast, noting that the size or population of a state is no longer a barrier to receiving sporting resources and opportunities.

"Currently, the Northeast represents about 4% of India's population, yet it hosts nearly 25% of all Khelo India Centres nationwide," he remarked.

"This demonstrates the Government of India's dedication to harnessing the vast sporting potential of the North East. While most districts in the country have one Khelo India Centre, several districts in the Northeast have been allocated two centres, ensuring enhanced access to training, coaching, and grassroots sports development," he added.

The meeting was attended by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse, Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, state Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, and sports officials from the eight Northeastern states, among others.
