Historic Sporting Milestones in Meghalaya
Today, Meghalaya achieved significant milestones in its sports journey with the inauguration of the Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall at the J N Sports Complex in Shillong and the signing of the Host State Agreement for the upcoming 39th National Games in 2027. The hall was inaugurated by Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports, alongside Meghalaya's Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma. The event also saw the presence of Raksha Nikhil Khadse, Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, and Dr. P T Usha, President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), among other dignitaries.

State-of-the-Art Sports Infrastructure
The Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Hall, constructed at a cost of Rs 132.9 crore, stands as one of India's premier indoor sports facilities. Completed in approximately 2.5 years despite challenging conditions, this project exemplifies effective planning and execution. Funded by the New Development Bank as part of the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project, the hall is ready to host Basketball and Kabaddi events during the 39th National Games.
In addition to the Games, the facility will feature a High-Performance Sports Science Centre, providing athletes with access to advanced training support in areas such as biomechanics, sports medicine, and nutrition.
Signing of Host Agreement for National Games 2027
During the ceremony, the Government of Meghalaya and the Indian Olympic Association formalized the Host State Agreement for the 39th National Games, confirming the State's readiness to host this prestigious multi-sport event. This agreement clarifies the roles and responsibilities of both parties, enhancing their partnership.
Following the 38th National Games in Uttarakhand in 2025, Meghalaya now joins Assam and Manipur as a host from the Northeast, further enriching the region's sporting legacy. The Games will coincide with Meghalaya's 55th Statehood anniversary in 2027, making it a significant celebration of the State's identity and progress.
