Meghalaya BJP Links NGO Member's Death to Illegal Mining Activities
Tragic Incident in Garo Hills
Shillong, Jan 11: The BJP in Meghalaya has asserted that the recent death of an NGO member, who was assaulted in Garo Hills on January 9, is connected to a group engaged in illegal mining activities. The Chief Spokesperson for the party, Mariahom Kharkrang, stated that the assault on Dilseng M Sangma highlights the ongoing issues related to illegal mining in the region, which often leads to tragic outcomes.
Kharkrang expressed that the incident has left the citizens of Meghalaya in a state of shock and disbelief. He pointed out that illegal mining has been a persistent problem in various parts of the state, including Jaintia Hills and Khasi Hills.
He emphasized that this latest event in Garo Hills adds to a troubling history of crimes and human tragedies linked to illegal mining, which he believes must be addressed immediately.
The BJP has called for severe penalties for those responsible for this crime and urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to ensure that the response goes beyond mere arrests.
Kharkrang insisted that a comprehensive investigation into illegal mining activities is essential, with corrective measures taken to halt unlawful practices and hold all involved accountable.
Following the violent attack that resulted in Sangma's death, three individuals were apprehended, and security measures were heightened in Goalgaon village, located in the West Garo Hills district.
Dilseng M Sangma was affiliated with the A·chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), a civil society organization in Garo. Reports indicate that he was part of a group of 10 to 12 ACHIK members who were attacked by a mob on the evening of January 9. Another member suffered serious injuries and is currently receiving medical care.
To maintain order and prevent further violence, the district administration has imposed a night curfew in the affected area.
