Shillong, May 6: Following the impressive electoral results of the BJP-led NDA in Assam and West Bengal, the Meghalaya BJP is ramping up its efforts to enhance its political presence in the state. This initiative includes a series of consultations with both current and former legislators from various regions.
Alexander Laloo Hek, a senior BJP leader and MLA, stated that the party is actively engaging in comprehensive discussions with political figures, including ex-MLAs and MDCs, to fortify its organizational structure in preparation for upcoming political contests.
Currently, the BJP holds only two seats in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.
A significant focus for the party is Mukul Sangma, the MLA from Songsak and a former Chief Minister. His potential switch to the BJP is seen as a crucial move for enhancing the party's influence in the Garo Hills area.
Hek remarked, “The BJP recognizes that if Sangma decides to join, he could bring other leaders from Garo Hills with him.”
He also noted that Sangma has not completely dismissed the idea of joining the BJP and is keeping his political options flexible.
Additionally, the Meghalaya BJP anticipates the arrival of three former MLAs from Khasi Hills soon. These include Jemino Mawthoh, a former legislator from Nongthymmai, Mohendro Rapsang, who previously represented West Shillong, and Pynshngainlang Syiem, a former MLA from Mawsynram.
Hek added, “Numerous political leaders, both current and former MLAs and MDCs, have reached out to me expressing interest in joining the BJP. We are optimistic that they will soon become part of the BJP family.”
Mawthoh, who previously served as a professor at North Eastern Hill University, won the Nongthymmai constituency in East Khasi Hills on a United Democratic Party ticket in 2013 but was unable to retain his seat in subsequent elections.
Rapsang, a businessman, was elected from West Shillong on a Congress ticket in 2018 but lost his seat in the 2023 Assembly elections.
Syiem, regarded as the most seasoned among the trio, represented the rural Mawsynram constituency after winning on a Congress ticket in 2008 and successfully defending his seat in 2013. However, he lost the constituency in 2018.
The BJP's renewed outreach efforts come at a pivotal moment as the party aims to expand its support base beyond its limited foothold in Meghalaya and solidify its gains in the Northeast following recent electoral victories in neighboring states.
