Meg Lanning Joins Coaching Staff for Under-19 Women's Tri-Series in Australia
Meg Lanning's New Role in Women's Cricket
Brisbane, Feb 27: Cricket Australia (CA) announced on Friday that the iconic Meg Lanning will be part of the coaching team for the Under-19 women's tri-series scheduled in Queensland next month.
Although Lanning retired from international cricket in 2023, she remains active in domestic and franchise cricket. In her new role, she will act as a development coach for the tri-series, which will also include teams from England and Sri Lanka, taking place in Brisbane and Gold Coast from March 30 to April 18.
Working alongside head coach Kristen Beams and assistant coaches Lisa Keightley and Clive Rose, this marks Lanning's second coaching experience, having previously assisted during the Lanning v Perry series last year.
CA has also announced a 14-player squad for the series, featuring several athletes who have already made their senior domestic debuts. These players are eligible for selection for the upcoming ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup, set to occur in 2027 in Bangladesh and Nepal.
“The Youth Selection Panel has put together a robust and balanced squad as we prepare for the Tri-Series against Sri Lanka and England. All fourteen players have shown remarkable performance this summer, and it was crucial to include those eligible for next year’s Under-19 World Cup,” stated Kristen.
“The Tri-Series presents a wonderful chance to highlight the emerging talent within Australia’s cricket pathways against formidable opponents like Sri Lanka and England,” she added.
After reaching the semi-finals in the first two editions of the Women's U19 T20 World Cup, Australia aims to clinch the trophy for the first time in 2027. “We are eager to witness the next generation of talent representing Australia at the Under-19 level in the upcoming Tri-Series,” Kristen remarked.
“Cricket Australia is dedicated to enhancing our pathways system and providing opportunities for players to develop. We look forward to seeing this squad take advantage of their chance against Sri Lanka and England,” said Sonya Thompson, Head of National Development at Cricket Australia.
Australia U19 squad: Ira Aery, Eva Baird, Mia Barwick, Alyssa Dermody, Ava Drury, Ayla Johnson, Shiloh Julien, Aurora Mavros, Indira Panelli, Emily Powell, Chelsea Sonter, Ayaka Stafford, Filippa Suesee, and Tegan Williamson.
