Meg Lanning Excited to Lead UP Warriorz in WPL 2026 Opener
Meg Lanning on Leading a Refreshed Squad
As the UP Warriorz prepare for their Women's Premier League (WPL) opener against the Gujarat Giants this Saturday, skipper Meg Lanning shared her enthusiasm about heading the new franchise. After spending three years with the Delhi Capitals, she highlighted the team's mix of seasoned players and youthful talent.
This season signifies a fresh beginning for the Warriorz, with Lanning leading a squad that combines international experience with promising domestic players. The roster includes established match-winners like Deepti Sharma, Sophie Ecclestone, Harleen Deol, and Deandra Dottin, complemented by dynamic young talents that enhance the team's versatility, according to a press release from the UP Warriorz.
Reflecting on her inaugural season with the Warriorz, Lanning expressed her eagerness to build upon the groundwork laid by the franchise. "I am truly excited to lead UP Warriorz this season. A lot of effort has gone into this over the years, and we aim to build on that. Our squad is well-balanced with both experience and youth, and now it's about going out there, playing our style of cricket, and enjoying the game."
Lanning's Impressive Track Record
Acquired by UP Warriorz for Rs 1.90 crore during last year's auction, Lanning joins a team that finished last in the previous season. Under her captaincy, the Delhi Capitals reached the finals in all three seasons but unfortunately did not secure a championship, losing to MI by seven wickets, RCB by eight wickets, and narrowly to MI by eight runs last season while chasing 150 runs.
In WPL history, Lanning ranks as the third-highest run-scorer, amassing 952 runs across 27 matches with an average of 39.66 and a strike rate exceeding 127, including nine fifties and a top score of 92. With 17 international centuries and over 8,300 runs, she is regarded as one of the greatest batters ever.
Decorated International Career
The Australian cricket legend, who has clinched five ICC Women's T20 World Cup titles and two ICC Women's Cricket World Cup trophies—six of which she captained—unexpectedly retired from international cricket last year at the age of 31.
Coach's Vision and Team Strategy
Head coach Abhishek Nayar emphasized the clarity and intent within the squad as they approach the opener: "We sought the best leader for this group, and Meg embodies that. This format thrives on strong leadership, and her presence allows the team to play freely. Our goal is to foster an environment where players can express themselves, enjoy the game, and establish a legacy for this franchise."
Key Players to Watch
All-rounder Deepti Sharma is expected to play a pivotal role for the Warriorz, following a successful year on the international stage, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. Sophie Ecclestone remains a crucial part of the bowling lineup, while new additions like Harleen Deol enhance the batting strength and fielding capabilities.
Nayar also highlighted the team's competitive spirit ahead of their first match: "This year marks a fresh start for us. We have built a robust squad with diverse skill sets that complement one another. Our objective is straightforward: play fearless cricket, maintain consistency, and aim for a deep run in the tournament."
Focus on the Opening Clash
The upcoming match against the Gujarat Giants will be crucial in setting the tone for the UP Warriorz's season as they strive to transform their potential into early success in Navi Mumbai.
