Gen NS Raja Subramani Takes Command as Chief of Defence Staff


In a significant development for India's military leadership, General NS Raja Subramani has officially assumed the role of Chief of Defence Staff. Known for his expertise in matters concerning Pakistan and China, he takes over from General Anil Chauhan, who completed his term as the highest-ranking military officer in the country.


Prior to this appointment, Gen Subramani served as the Military Advisor at the National Security Council Secretariat and retired as the Vice Chief of Army Staff on July 31 of the previous year.


Upon taking office, Gen Subramani emphasized his commitment to transforming the armed forces and implementing organizational reforms aimed at enhancing cooperation among the three military services.


He stated, "We will expedite the development, induction, and integration of indigenous weaponry into our forces," during a brief address to the media.


Highlighting the professionalism and operational effectiveness of the armed forces, he reassured the citizens of India of their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the nation's sovereignty and territorial integrity.


Gen Subramani's primary objective as Chief of Defence Staff will be to execute the theaterisation model, which involves establishing integrated military commands.


With a distinguished career spanning over four decades, he has held various command, staff, and instructional roles across diverse conflict scenarios and terrains.


His previous roles include serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff from July 1, 2024, to July 31, 2025, and leading the Central Command from March 2023 to June 2024.


A graduate of both the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, Gen Subramani was commissioned into the eighth battalion of the Garhwal Rifles on December 14, 1985.


He has also completed advanced studies at the Joint Services Command and Staff College in the UK and the National Defence College in New Delhi, holding a Master of Arts from King's College, London, and an MPhil in Defence Studies from Madras University.


His operational experience includes commanding the 16 Garhwal Rifles during counter-insurgency operations in Assam, leading the 168 Infantry Brigade in Jammu and Kashmir, and overseeing the 17 Mountain Division in challenging environments.


Additionally, he has commanded two corps, including a key strike corps on the Western Front.


Gen Subramani's extensive staff and instructional experience includes roles such as Brigade Major of a Mountain Brigade, Defence Attaché in Kazakhstan, and Deputy Director General of Military Intelligence at the Ministry of Defence.


For his exemplary service, he has been honored with several prestigious awards, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Sena Medal, and Vishisht Seva Medal.
