Meenakshi Goyat, who earned a silver medal at the Asian Championships, expressed her joy after defeating World Championships bronze medalist Vinesh Phogat during the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) women's trials. This victory was crucial for her aspirations to join the Asian Games squad, as she aims to become a world champion this year.

The 53 kg category was the highlight of the trials, where Meenakshi's unexpected win over Vinesh, with a score of 6-4 in the semifinals, stood out. However, she faced a setback in the finals, losing to Antim Panghal 3-2. Although she did not qualify for the Asian Games set to commence in September in Japan, her victory against Vinesh remains a significant achievement.

Determination and Reflections

In an interview, Meenakshi shared her thoughts on the match, stating, "It was a fantastic victory. I aimed to fight until the end without focusing on the outcome." She acknowledged making some mistakes during the bout but emphasized the excitement of competing against Vinesh.

Meenakshi dedicated her win to her family and coaches, who have supported her journey. Looking ahead, she is focused on the World Championships scheduled from October 24 to November 1 in Kazakhstan, expressing her ambition to become a world champion this year.

A Father's Pride and Olympic Aspirations

Her father, Prem, expressed his pride in her achievements, sharing that he always envisioned her making a name for herself in wrestling and representing the country at the Olympics. After her victory over Vinesh, he noted the joy it brought to their village and home.

Prem also reflected on the challenges Meenakshi faced, including significant injuries that once led doctors to doubt her ability to continue wrestling. He remains hopeful for her future, aiming for her to secure gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
