Rising Measles Cases Prompt Alarm

Guwahati, July 14: In various nations, diseases once believed to be eradicated are re-emerging as health authorities relax their vigilance. In Assam, significant advancements in vaccination have been made, yet some children remain unvaccinated for various reasons.
A report from the international organization Global Health Strategies highlights that measles has been a major triumph in public health for many years. Widespread vaccination has turned a disease that previously claimed millions of young lives into one that many parents today have never encountered.
However, measles is experiencing a troubling resurgence globally. Countries in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia are witnessing renewed outbreaks. The United States, which declared measles eliminated in 2000, has reported over 1,800 cases across 39 jurisdictions this year, raising fears of losing its elimination status. Outbreaks have also been noted in several European nations, including Romania, Italy, the UK, France, Germany, and Spain, while the Pan American Health Organization has issued warnings about a resurgence in the Americas.
The World Health Organization has indicated that measles outbreaks are now occurring in every region worldwide, primarily due to gaps in routine immunization coverage.
