Mark Your Calendars for May 5

Save the date of May 5, as McDonald's will introduce a new Happy Meal themed around "Stranger Things: Tales from '85," a fresh Netflix spin-off that delves deeper into the universe of the beloved series. According to a statement from Netflix, this collaboration aims to engage fans globally with a special Happy Meal inspired by the animated series created by Eric Robles and produced by the Duffer Brothers. Inside the meal box, customers will discover a themed activity book, a QR code that links to an interactive digital game, and one of twelve collectible toys featuring characters from the show. Iconic characters like Eleven, Dustin, Will, Max, Lucas, and Mike will be included, with two new characters revealed each week, encouraging fans to return for more.

The promotion will initially roll out in U.S. locations before expanding to countries such as Brazil, Singapore, Norway, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal, Italy, and India in the upcoming weeks, as stated by Netflix.

The Significance of the QR Code

While toys have traditionally driven Happy Meal sales, this initiative introduces a digital component that enhances the experience. The QR code serves a crucial purpose, directing customers to the McDonald's app, where they can access loyalty rewards, personalized offers, and incentives for repeat visits.

This marks the second collaboration with Netflix in a short span, following a K-Pop Demon Hunters promotion in March.

Addressing Business Challenges

McDonald's has faced challenges recently, with consumers becoming more cautious about their spending, resulting in fewer customers dining in. Additionally, rising food costs have made dining out 3.8 percent more expensive compared to grocery shopping in the year ending March 2026, prompting many to reconsider their drive-thru visits.

Promotions like this are designed to attract families, encouraging them to visit, scan QR codes, and download the app.
