MCC Launches Laws of Cricket App in Hindi and Urdu to Enhance Accessibility
MCC's Initiative to Make Cricket Laws Accessible
Fraser Stewart, the Head of Cricket at the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), announced that the introduction of the Laws of Cricket app in Hindi and Urdu represents a significant advancement in making cricket regulations more accessible to officials, players, and fans throughout India and beyond.
On Wednesday, the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) organized a special workshop focusing on the MCC Laws of Cricket for its umpires, in anticipation of the new laws taking effect on October 1, 2026. A standout feature of this event was the unveiling of the MCC Laws of Cricket app, which is now available in Hindi. The app supports multiple languages, including Hindi, Urdu, Bengali, and Kannada, thereby broadening access to cricket laws for officials and enthusiasts across India.
Enhancing Understanding of Cricket Regulations
In an interview, Fraser Stewart highlighted that the MCC collaborated closely with the International Cricket Council (ICC) to translate the Laws of Cricket into various languages for the first time. The app, which was initially launched in English, now includes Hindi and Urdu, with Bangla and Kannada versions expected to be released shortly. This initiative aims to simplify the understanding of cricket regulations, which can often be complex when not presented in a person's native language. Stewart emphasized that this effort will enable a wider audience in India and beyond to engage with cricket laws.
Stewart remarked, "Today marks an exciting milestone as we launch the Laws of Cricket app in Hindi and Urdu, alongside English. We will be visiting various cities in India, with Bangla and Kannada versions launching soon, and more languages to follow in the upcoming weeks. This is a significant step in making cricket laws more accessible to everyone."
Cricket's Global Reach with India at Its Core
Stewart noted that the translation and digital release of the MCC's Laws of Cricket is just the beginning of making their publications more accessible. Given cricket's global nature and India's pivotal role in the sport, the MCC aims to simplify the laws by offering them in multiple languages and refining the wording in the latest edition.
He stated, "This is the first phase of translating and publishing MCC's materials under our banner. While the laws have been translated before, they have never been digitally or physically released by the MCC. This is a major advancement and the first of many steps. Cricket is a global sport, and India is at its heart. It is our responsibility as custodians of the laws to ensure they are accessible in various languages and easy to understand."
DDCA's Support for the Initiative
DDCA Director Shyam Sharma expressed enthusiasm about hosting the MCC app launch at their venue, emphasizing the importance of keeping umpires and scorers informed about the new cricket laws set to take effect on October 1.
"We are thrilled to have the MCC launch the app here. Starting October 1, the new rules will be implemented, and we have invited all umpires and scorers to ensure they are well-informed about these changes," he stated.
