Arrest of a Tire Thief in Hyderabad

In Hyderabad, police have apprehended an MBA student accused of stealing tires and rims from vehicles. The authorities recovered a total of 15 wheels from the suspect, including 12 from a Mahindra Thar. Investigations revealed that the individual specifically targeted Mahindra Thar vehicles, seizing their wheels when the opportunity arose. The suspect, identified as Shoban Ali Khan, was arrested on Saturday.

The inquiry was initiated following a complaint lodged on October 20, where the complainant reported that the spare tire of a Mahindra Thar parked outside the Galaxy Enclave Apartments in the Rethibowli area had been stolen. After receiving the complaint, police registered a case and began reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity.

Upon examining the CCTV footage, police observed a young man arriving at the scene on a scooter. He was later identified as Shoban Ali Khan, who was seen removing the spare tire from the rear of the Mahindra Thar. Following this identification, police launched a search and arrested him on Saturday.

Details Captured on CCTV

The CCTV footage provided a detailed account of the theft. Initially, the suspect arrived at the location on his scooter and began removing the spare tire from the Mahindra Thar using tools he had brought along. He remained vigilant of his surroundings while loosening the bolts on the tire. However, when another scooter passed by, he abruptly halted his actions and attempted to appear inconspicuous.

After a brief period, when traffic decreased, he returned to the vehicle. Sensing the presence of potential witnesses, he again retreated to his scooter. He monitored the street for a suitable moment and, when he believed no one was watching, approached the Mahindra Thar once more.

This time, he swiftly removed the spare tire and placed it on his scooter before fleeing the scene. The entire incident was recorded on CCTV, aiding the police in their investigation.

Using Tools from Tire Shops

During police questioning, additional details about the suspect's methods emerged. It was revealed that Shoban did not possess his own tools for removing tires and instead borrowed them from local tire repair shops. He would visit these shops, request tools for tire removal, and leave a security deposit of 200 to 300 rupees.

After extracting the tire and rim from the vehicle, he would return the tools and reclaim his deposit. This method allowed him to commit theft without owning any tools. According to police, he used a spanner to easily detach the spare tires from cars.

Investigations also uncovered that Shoban's father works at a wheel alignment shop, which likely provided him with prior knowledge about vehicle wheels and related technicalities. This expertise may have facilitated his ability to steal tires and rims.

Confession to Multiple Thefts

During interrogation, Shoban Ali Khan confessed to being involved in several thefts across different areas. He admitted to participating in 11 theft cases registered at 10 police stations. Police recovered not only the Mahindra Thar wheels but also wheels from other vehicles.

Among the 15 wheels recovered were two from a Ford Endeavour and one from a Ford EcoSport, in addition to the 12 from the Mahindra Thar. Authorities are currently gathering information on these stolen wheels to determine the locations from which they were taken.

The police are preparing to place the suspect in remand to further investigate when he began his tire and rim thefts and whether he is linked to other reported cases at various police stations. They will also examine the network involved in the sale of the stolen wheels, aiming to uncover who he sold them to and how much wealth he has accumulated through these crimes. Authorities hope that further questioning will yield significant insights into additional thefts and associated individuals.
